How to Register a Company Vehicle in Ontario: Requesting a RIN
If you’re a business owner in Ontario and you want to register a vehicle for use by your corporation or business, you’ll need to follow a different process than if you were registering a vehicle for personal use. Instead of using your own driver’s license, you’ll need to request a Registrant Identification Number (RIN) for your corporation or business.
A RIN is a unique identification number assigned to a business by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation (MTO). This number is used to identify the corporation or business as the registered owner of a vehicle, rather than an individual.
To obtain a RIN, you’ll need to provide the MTO with some basic information about your corporation or business, including its name, address, and business number, along with a Sworn Letter. You may also need to provide additional information, such as your Articles of Incorporation or other legal documents, to verify that your business is a legal entity in Ontario.
Steps to Get a Registrant Identification Number (RIN) for Your Business
1. Ensure Your Business is Legally Registered
Before you can request a RIN, you must ensure that your business is legally registered with the government of Ontario. This typically involves registering with the Ministry of Government Services and obtaining a Business Number.
2. Gather the Necessary Information
To request a RIN, you’ll need to provide the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) with certain information about your business, such as its legal name, address, and Business Number. You may also need to provide additional documentation, such as your Articles of Incorporation or a business registration certificate.
3. Contact the MTO
Once you have the necessary information, you can contact the MTO to request a RIN for your business. You can do this by calling the MTO’s customer service line, or by visiting a ServiceOntario centre in person.
4. Submit Your Application
When you contact the MTO, they will provide you with an application form that you’ll need to fill out and submit. This form will typically ask for your business’s legal name, address, and Business Number, as well as any supporting documentation that is required.
5. Wait for Your RIN
After you submit your application, the MTO will review it and assign a RIN to your business if you are approved. This process can take several days to several weeks, depending on the volume of requests the MTO is processing.
Once you have obtained a RIN, you can use it to register any vehicles that your business or corporation owns or leases. This process is similar to registering a vehicle for personal use, but instead of using your driver’s license, you’ll need to use your RIN and provide some additional information about the vehicle, such as its make, model, and VIN number.
After your vehicle is registered, you’ll need to obtain a permit and license plate from the MTO. You can do this by visiting a ServiceOntario centre or by applying online through the MTO’s website. You’ll need to provide your RIN, vehicle information, and other documentation to obtain your permit and license plate.
It’s important to note that there are some specific rules and regulations that apply to corporations and businesses that own or operate vehicles in Ontario. For example, businesses are required to maintain proper insurance coverage for their vehicles, and they may be subject to additional licensing or regulatory requirements depending on the type of business they operate.
