What are OSAP affidavits, and how are they used?
Many of you will soon apply for financial assistance for your university studies. Many of you will need to prove certain elements of your life and financial situation, such as your marital or financial status. With this, you will need to work on and submit an OSAP affidavit.
What is OSAP
OSAP is the Ontario Student Assistance Program, and provides student loans and grants to post-secondary students. These loans and financial assistance are an important part of many individuals to get their degrees and graduate.
When you apply for OSAP, you are automatically considered for both grants and loans. If you don’t want to take a loan, you can decline it after your application is approved.
OSAP is available primarily for Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons.
What is an Affidavit
An affidavit is a document that is sworn and signed before a lawyer, a person who is not a lawyer but who is a commissioner of oaths, or a notary public. You will be required to swear or affirm that the contents of the affidavit are true.
What is an OSAP Affidavit
In a few instances, OSAP will require that you provide a sworn and signed statement about certain elements within your application. These may conclude:
- Your common-law status
- Sole supporting parent
- You are separated, divorced, or widowed
- Indigenous
- Spouse Income Verification
- Parent Income Verification
- Your marital status
